The Sebago® brand was born in Westbrook, Maine (USA), in 1946. Daniel J. Wellehan, owner of 5 shoe shops in the area, decides to found his own factory. The name is inspired by the nearby lake Sebago, which in the Indian language Abenaki means "water basin with an elongated shape". The same year the first moccasin was born, the famous penny loafer, hand-sewn according to the indigenous tradition, still today one of the best sellers of the brand.
